Catnip
Nepatia Cataria
Catnip is a kin to Oregano and has also been labeled as part of the mint family. Some say it is native to America but others say it came from England and was imported to America. The common misnomer is that Catnip is Cat Mint, but that is not true, Cat Mint has its own roots and definition. Catnip is beloved by cats and humans alike for different reasons, for humans it is a mild sedative and some say it helps with various ailments but for cats it is a sensual stimulant.
Catnip’s effect on cats varies from total obsession to no effects at all. Most cats love the aroma and seek it out and that's why it works in toys. The biggest mistake people make when administering Catnip is to give too much to kitty and give it far too often, cats respond to Catnip the way we respond to our favorite food so to give it to kitty daily diminishes its effects. For your cats sake you should keep it out of sight and away from kitty’s nose and treat your cat to it as a special event.
Valerian Root
Valeriana officinalis
Valerian has a distinct odor that is very strong to humans and cats alike. It is a native of Asia and a perennial flowering plant. Valerian has been used as a sleeping remedy for humans but its effect on cats, though documented has gone unnoticed by most cat lovers.
Dried Valerian Root has a similar effect on cats as catnip but for some cats this herb is irresistible and has been known to inspire cats to destroy containers of it in pursuit of its pungent goodness. Cats roll in it and eat it.
